Date: 29 April 1999 Subject: Re: updates Here is our 10-year saga to add to the annals of the Vienna circle archives. After leaving Vienna in 1989, Frank and Annette moved to Palo Alto, CA, where Frank had taken a job as a writer in IBM's Knowledge Based Systems in Menlo Park. After that site was closed in 1990, Frank transferred to Santa Teresa Lab where he has worked ever since. We sold our condo in Palo Alto and bought a home in the lovely neighborhood of Willow Glen in San Jose. Annette worked her way up to the position of Senior Conference Coordinator at the American Association of Artificial Intelligence, where she worked from 1989 to 1997. She is now the Director for Special Events and Travel for the San Jose Museum of Art, which she greatly enjoys but finds very demanding and a challenge to balance with her parenting responsibilities. In 1994, our daughter Veronica was born and to our amazement will start Kindergarten in the Fall. Veronica loves drawing and painting, Mozart, Pooh, Barbie, and horses. She is bilingual, although Veronica usually responds in English even though she understands Swedish perfectly. She is a great traveler, having visited Sweden three times and will soon embark with us on her fourth European vacation. Yes, we feel the tug of Vienna after 10 years of being away and have decided to visit the fabled city this summer. It's interesting that I seem to return to Vienna on regular 10-year cycles: it started when I studied in Vienna for one semester in 1979; then, for that fabulous year in 1989; and now, for a 5-day visit in June. From Vienna, we travel by train to Florence where we will spend a few days before joining the Avery family in the Chianti countryside for a week of Bacchanalia and Tuscan wanderings. We will then spend a week in the area south of Sienna, staying at two small family-run B&Bs. Our final Italian destination is Ravenna, where we will fulfill a lifelong desire of seeing the famous mosaics. From Ravenna, it's back to Vienna for a final day before returning home. We only hope that we won't have to wait until 2009 before returning again! We definitely plan to get together with Rick and Barb and some other friends, but it would be great if any of you who still get to Vienna on occasion happened to be there during our visit. Let us know so we can make arrangements to meet!
